Student loan rules and repayment plans can change. If you have federal loans, begin with your own account details and official information rather than an old screenshot or a general payment estimate.

Build your loan list

Sign in to StudentAid.gov to see your federal loans and servicer information. Confirm the balance, interest rate, repayment status, and next due date with your servicer. Update your contact details so you receive billing notices.

Compare plans using your numbers

Review the currently available repayment plans and use the federal Loan Simulator to estimate monthly payments and total costs. A lower monthly payment can mean paying over a longer period, so look at both figures. If your income has changed or a payment is difficult, contact your servicer early to ask about available options rather than ignoring a bill.

Keep a simple routine

Check how interest is charged and how extra payments are applied. Save confirmations of payments and any plan changes. If you also have private loans, check those contracts separately; federal repayment options may not apply to them.
