When a car payment feels too high, stretching the loan term can make the monthly number smaller. It can also mean paying more interest over time. Compare the full deal before deciding.
Get the key numbers
Ask for the vehicle’s price, taxes and fees, down payment, trade-in value, amount financed, APR, loan term, monthly payment, and total of payments. Check optional products separately, including service contracts or other add-ons, so you can decide whether you want them.
Consider asking a bank or credit union for a financing offer before visiting a dealer. You can compare that offer with dealer-arranged financing using the same vehicle price and loan amount. Read the Truth-in-Lending disclosure before signing and ask whether paying early has any penalty.
Budget for the car, not just the loan
Add insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, registration, and repairs to your monthly plan. A car that fits one payment quote might still strain the rest of your budget. Take copies of the contract and confirm the financing terms are final before leaving with the vehicle.
